The Japanese Educational
Institute of New York
The Japanese Educational Institute of New York (JEI) is a non-profit organization established in 1975 with the approval of the New York State Department of Education to operate all-day and weekend Japanese schools in the Tri-State area.
Currently, JEI operates all-day Japanese schools in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Oakland, New Jersey, and provides education in Japanese from 1st grade to 9th grade with a curriculum based on the Japanese Course of Study. Weekend Schools are located in Westchester County, Queens Borough, New York, and Bergen County, New Jersey, and provide Japanese language education and the opportunity to learn Japanese Culture and Traditions from preschool to high school grades.
The board of directors, the organization’s highest decision-making body, comprises members from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York and the Japan Club and Principals from the Schools where the JEI operates. Under the board, the NY Committee and the NJ Committee, which comprises volunteers from Japanese companies in New York and New Jersey, Japanese government officials in New York, and principals of each school, are responsible for the daily operation of the schools.
The organization and the schools’ operating funds come from tuition fees, subsidies provided by the Japanese government, and company donations.
